The drive up to Yankee Boy Basin is an easy 6 miles. Then you hit the last two plus miles and you'll need a 4WD vehicle. The road goes further but I won't take my SUV past that point. But this is a great place for photographing Colorado wildflowers in the summer and taking in the rugged and beautiful landscape on the San Juan Mountains. It seems as if you one could not take a bad image of this pristine location.
Further up the road is one of Colorado's iconic 14ers, Mount Sneffels. Across the Blue Lakes Pass in the same area, you can actually hike up and over the pass and drop into the Blue Lakes area, one of the most colorful places I've ever seen in the summer. In both places, columbine, lupine, blue bells, paintbrush, and other wildflowers bloom in July and August, painting the hillsides in a tapestry of color.
Yankee Boy Basin is actually privately owned, but the owners allow folks up on their land.
