Colorado Wildflower images and photos (24/96)

I crawled out of be at 3:45am and made the 45 minute drive from Durango to the Ice Lakes trailhead near Silverton... all in an attempt to photograph the Colorado landscape and the wildflowers that grow on the slopes. I had already photographed some coloumbine images at sunrise, made my way to Island Lake, and was heading back down when I had to stop here and photograph this scene. <br />

In the distance you can see Lower Ice Lake, about 1000 vertical feet below. The blue sky and white clouds seemed nearly perfect to me. Surrounding Lower Ice Lake are Fuller Peak (13,761-ft.), Vermillion Peak (13,894-ft.), Golden Horn (13,780-ft.) and Pilot Knob (13,738-ft.).<br />

Usually, because I pull myself out of bed so early, I'm the first one up. This was the case in this trek up, but I did pass more than several groups heading up on my way out. Back at my care, the parking lot was full! There was one group camping at Island Lake (a very secluded and scenic place to spend the night, for sure!). So if you like solitude, get up early for this hike. You'll avoid both the crowds and the daily afternoon storms that roll over these lofty and beautiful Rocky Mountains in the San Juans.
